PBR speaks..

Roller Derby mentality is a topic not always touched on however is a huge part of the on & off the track game. By definition, mentality is the “mode or way of thought , outlook” which can really play into a person’s performance more then one may realize. We all want to be winners and the best but sometimes the cards are not dealt that way. However with having a POSITIVE derby mentality anything is possible!

This positive thought process is a good tactic across the boards for anyone! A coach that pushes their team with positive reinforcement verse constantly pushing negatively will see a better result within their league, the team captain that positively motivates themselves & their teammates will see a higher team morale and more drive coming from within each and everyone personally. Moral of the story is that anything is possible with positive thinking! No matter how good you are we all have improvements that can be made, goals we would like to achieve, and situations that need some attention when it comes to helping out your fellow skate mate. If more of these things were met with a positive outlook, more positive outcomes would happen!

One of the most common feelings in derby I hear about is frustration. Individuals verbalize not being able to do something like someone else can, that they seem to be lacking that edge that they desire or how they can’t do something thus leading to frustration. Let me break it down for you: Frustration is a waste of your time folks! Whatever it may deal with, take that frustration and use it as a launching tool for improvement in a positive fashion. You can do anything you set you mind to as long as you don’t get in your own way! Knocking your morale down or thinking negatively will get you no where! Rather, look at how much you accomplished thus far in your own personal game and know that nothing is as easy as others may make it look. Never compare your game to someone else’s because at the end of the day it is only your game you can control! We all entered and roll on that track in different ways, some with years of skating under their belts and others lacing up for the first time because they knew that roller derby is were they belonged but we are all in this together remember that. Everything takes hard work, practice and time!

-Rolling Sturgis 2011: The year of the “optional pants” and Holy Pancakes

For the past 71 years, motorcycle enthusiasts travel to Sturgis, South Dakota to take part in biggest rally known to the realm. All walks of life from all corners of the world come to the “party” that provides so much different exposure for so many different organizations. Whether it be motocross hill climbing, gun ranges, rides through the hills for charity organizations and many other opportunities of exposure it is all available at the Sturgis Rally. This year, added to the mix again with a little revamping, was “Rolling Sturgis” !

Now throwing off such an event was not going to be an easy task but The Triple Threat Derby Girls were up for the challenge! Check lists were made and the ball started rolling. First off, a venue was needed . In 2010, the location of the event was at the “Monkey Rock” but in the true tradition of go big or go home the location of Rolling Sturgis needed to be at a place of legend because that is exactly what this year’s event was going to be. After many meetings and walking the grounds, The LEGENDARY BUFFALO CHIP was to be the new home of our event. In case you didn’t thoroughly ready the line above I will repeat… THE LEGENDARY BUFFALO CHIP WAS THE NEW HOME OF ROLLING STURGIS!

With the location booked, next on the checklist was the production of the event. A floor to roll on, skaters to attend, and sponsors were needed to add to the mix. The whole scene of the floor was going to be quite the feat of man power to pull off, but like the Beatles say “I get by with a little help from my friends…” . Danger Girl made the wise investment with Portable Skatecourt and on July 27th the T3 colored track was delivered to the grounds in Sturgis! Now, we all know that there is a behind the scenes crew to every great event. Rolling Sturgis’ personal “go to, make it happen, and will name our first born after” was Joe Jansen with the support of  Curvacious B. Without a doubt, Joe went above and beyond the call of derby to make this event happen! T3er’s Danger Girl and Sum Mo Payne used their man parts along with Joe and several beloved volunteers to assemble the support system to be placed under the new track. 2 days of hard labor, 1,540  2x4s,  46,200 nails, 220 sheets of plywood later the scene was set for the track! On August 4th the rest of the T3 crew rolled into town and the final step of laying the 9000 tiles of track happened followed by the sweet 1st roll aka “ACCOMPLISHMENT of DREAMS COME TRUE” took place on the brand new track at The Legendary Buffalo Chip. EPIC!!

Sk8rs and referees ,from literally all over the world, joined in on the “biggest party on wheels”. Over 12 leagues were represented at Rolling Sturgis: Madhouse Madams, Minnesota Roller Girls, Black Hills Aces N Sk8tes, Naughty Pines Derby Dames, Sioux City Roller Dames, Sioux Falls Roller Dollz, No Coast Derby Girls, Duluth Derby Divas, Choice City Rebels, Missile Mountain Roller Derby, and Helsinki Roller Derby to name a few! Those who attended got to tap into clinics taught by Tigre Force (Helsinki), Misfit Maiden (MNRG) and T3. Not only was playing nightly mixers and having fun on the menu, but learning more about the sport we all love so much was also part of the experience! To capture the essence of Rolling Sturgis, “Open Road Productions” took footage of the event and will be making a documentary to be released in 2012.

The nightly showcasing of the talent attending Rolling Sturgis was, and still is, on the tongues of many spectators who got the chance to see the event first hand. The Legendary Buffalo Chip showed some love and hooked up some bleachers for the spectators to sit back and enjoy the games. However, many just rolled up on their two wheeled beasts or four wheeled gators because couldn’t remember where they had parked their bikes, or just walked up with chair & coolers in hand to be part of the in your face action! Night after night, several faces became familiar and new fans of Roller Derby had been born. Our neighbors from the LimpNickie Lot grew to be our number one fans. Every night, our new found friends brought more of their buddies who had just rolled in to show off the ladies and even lace up & do some butt bouncing/get some rink rash on our track themselves.

Now every great event has great sponsors who know that this is the event they want to be involved in! This year Riedell, All Star Trailer and Rapid Spa got exposure during Rolling Sturgis and also got the status of being the best on the block in our books! Many helped with donations of items as well. Whether it be the SCRD loaning out their score program, Bones’ brother lending us the PA system ,  Dubbs’ brother for miscellaneous necessities to name a few that showed the love, THANK YOU – THANK YOU – T H A N K Y O U!!!!

In the true tradition of learning thru experience, The Triple Threat Derby Girls have got big plans on making next year bigger and better! Rolling Sturgis 2012?! Oh Yeahhh! See you and your 8 wheels there… pants optional!

Recap of Sk8 the State for MS 2011: Nebraska

Sk8 the State for MS Takes on Nebraska

By Amelia Saint

During the final week of August, the last of the dog days of summer, three roller derby teammates undertook the second annual Sk8 the State for MS. The trek across Nebraska was a grueling 216 miles from the Kansas border to Yankton, South Dakota, where the skate across South Dakota ended last year. After I helped out with last year’s fundraiser, the skaters invited me to be a full-fledged member of “Team Ironfeet” and skate with them this year. I was thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful event, and determined to make this year bigger and better than last.

Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a widespread central nervous system disease which can affect people of any race, age or gender, regardless of health or family history. Most commonly, MS sufferers lose control of their movements, sometimes losing the ability to move altogether. The mission of Sk8 the State for MS is to keep moving, skating across a different state each year, in an effort to bring greater attention and funding to the National MS Society.

In 2010, the inaugural year of Sk8 the State three Sioux City Roller Dames, Dani “Dubbs” Bock, Melissa “Mo Payne” Dittberner and Libby “PBR” Claeys skated across South Dakota. The 266-mile journey took eight days of hard skating across the low hills (they don’t seem so low when you are skating over them) of Eastern South Dakota. The trip took a toll on the skater’s bodies as well.

“I had chunks missing from my heels by about day 3,” says Dubbs, “Every morning we had to get up two hours before we actually wanted to skate just so we could bandage up our feet.”

Even with all of the prep, Dubbs’ feet bled through her bandages after the first ten miles.

“We learned how to take care of our feet,” says Mo Payne, “We had really nice skates from Vanilla, but didn’t realize that if you sweat through your socks, your feet are going to blister, no matter how comfortable your skates are.”

They also learned the importance of physical training and nutrition before the skate. For 2011, we took up a rigorous training regimen, which included group skating sessions on the very roads that we would skate during the fundraiser. This was particularly helpful for me; since I didn’t skate with them last year, I really had no idea how different skating on a highway shoulder was from skating on a nice, shady trail. The asphalt radiates heat, making it feel 20 degrees hotter than it actually is. And shade is nowhere to be found.

Potholes and gravel were expected hazards, but I didn’t know–until I hit one–that a tar patch will immediately stop your wheels, while your body keeps moving. I learned early on not to try to jump or step over every crack in the pavement; this breaks your stride and can hurt your knees and hips. We were incredibly lucky to have Atom as our wheel sponsor. They gave us all Pulse’s and their new outdoor wheel, Road Hogs, which are large enough to roll over cracks that would swallow a smaller wheel.

After six months of training on roads, trails, in the gym, even in my bathroom, doing squats every morning while I brushed my teeth, I was ready to tackle the highways of Nebraska. Then three weeks before the skate, after a night of strength training, I found that my left leg wouldn’t bear any weight. My doctor told me that I had torn my quadricep and would not be able to skate for four to six weeks.

I spent a couple of days feeling stupid, thinking back over every weight, every exercise, every skipped stretch, and regretting not taking better care of myself. After some words of encouragement and support from my wonderful teammates, I resolved to remain active with Sk8 the State, going along with the other skaters as a support driver, pep-talker, blister bandager, foot masseur and anything else that they might need. It was heartbreaking watching them skate and struggle from behind a windshield, and wanting nothing more than to be out on the 113-degree road with them. But being there to support them, being ready with a snack, a band aid or a hydration drink before they even knew they needed it, helped me feel like I was still part of the team.

Mo, Dubbs and PBR skated 50-60 miles each day, splitting the skating into two or three long sessions to avoid the worst heat of the day. Instead of crawling into an air-conditioned hotel room and passing out after their long days of skating (which is what I would have done if I had been skating), we went out fundraising and spreading the word about the MS Society and their good work. Roller derby teams in Omaha, Lincoln and Norfolk, NE, who are usually our rivals on the track, organized fundraising events for Sk8 the State as we worked our way across the state. These fundraisers accounted for some of our biggest donations, and we can’t thank our derby community enough for stepping up to help us fight MS.

The North-South skate was finished in 4 days, but we wanted to skate across our “home” bridge and right into Sioux City. We found a 5-mile trail from South Sioux City Nebraska to the bridge across the Missouri River and into Iowa. For the last 5 miles of the journey, we invited members of our roller derby team, the men’s team, the Korn Stalkers and other skaters to join us. A dozen skaters rolled into Sioux City where we met our friends, family, teammates and many of the wonderful people who we came to know through the fundraiser. After an afternoon welcome home block party, Mo, Dubbs and PBR suited up for the Roller Dames’ home opener–a bout against the Norfolk Bruizin’ Bettys. After skating 216 miles, these three ladies were the first to take the track, with Dubbs and PBR blocking for Mo Payne, who was on the jam line. Tired and sore, they still owned the track and the Roller Dames won with a final score of 31-259.

We have already started planning for next year’s skate, which will be across our home state of Iowa. When asked if they were going to skate across every state, PBR replied:

“Ask me again when I’m 70.”

For more information about next year’s skate and what you can do to help, you can follow us on Facebook (Sk8 the State for MS), Twitter (@Sk8theState) and our blog (sk8thestate.blogspot.com).

Kearney, Ne meets ROLLER DERBY!

Over a month later the dust has still not settled in Kearney, NE after the Triple Threat Derby Girls pulled off an amazing display of roller derby at its finest! Women & Men Sk8rs traveled to a town where derby was originally unheard of to show the great folks what the sport they are all so passionate about entails. The mission was to expose the great citizens of Kearney and its surrounding areas to what REAL roller derby was all about, and the 2,800+ plus brave souls that ventured out on the day the world was suppose to end witnessed roller derby at its finest!

Leading up to the epic event, the Triple Threat Derby Girls had their work cut out for them to get all the needs necessary to pull off such an event. With the help and drive to make this event happen, a huge THANK YOU goes out to the staff of Viaero Event Center! They pulled out the red carpet and made our dream a reality by providing a facility that was beyond perfect for the occasion! The cards just seemed to fall into place after the venue was secured. Murphy at Hits 106 plugged the “Spring Smackdown” more than humanly possible almost like a Superhero of the airwaves, helping to bring in quite the crowd and even let us stop by to beat up his interns from time to time. The Rodeway Inn & Suites staff knew that we were going to need somewhere to house everyone and were kind enough to open their doors and let us make ourselves at home! The “selling cars like candy bars” crew at Midway Chrysler Dodge Jeep also allowed us to stop by and get exposure while supporting our cause and let us pick up a few of the staff for some priceless photograph moments!

Now obviously we couldn’t have all these folks sk8ing around topless, so the crusaders of keeping people clothed aka Shirt Shack, Refind & Thunderhead Brewing Company provided the sponsorship to have t-shirts made for those involved. All that was left on our checklist was to find the after party. Every great bout is followed by a great after bout PARTY and the folks at “The Garage” knew that we’d fit in perfect there with the rock legends of “Crazy Horses“ playing on stage to finish the night off perfectly! After weeks of preparation, countless phone calls, many tanks of gas, lots of derby love and only minor details left, we’d done it… BOUT TIME!

On May 21st at 6pm, the doors opened and the epicness began. Autographs were signed, “Crazy Horses” pumped out some rocking live music, derby souvenirs were purchases, spectators scrambled to their seats and the sk8rs took to the floor. The American Legion Post 52 presented the colors and the angelic voice belonging to Sonja Harms kicked off the events in true American fashion. The Sioux City KornStalkers (wearing signature brewed Thunderhead “Cornstalker“shirts) & Colorado’s Rollin’ Bones rolled into battle to start the eve off right. It was quite a bout, full of hard hits and derby “man”hem! Everyone had a great time and the KornStalkers came off the bench with their first “W” which was beyond deserved. MVP’s of the bout were Morbo from Rollin’ Bones and Camel Joe of the KornStalkers.

The ladies bout came next and was one for the books. Team Shirt Shack vs. Team Refind took the floor and showed how the women of the roller derby realm roll. Leagues from all over sent sk8rs who represented them well! The Sioux City Roller Dames sent Dubbs, T-Vicious, The Annihilatrix, Sum Mo Payne, Spanky Bottoms, P.B.R. and Lil’ Mizfit. Crossing 3 states, The Black Hills Ace’s n Sk8’s were represented by Little Miss Sunshiner, Danger Girl, and Scarlotte’s Web. Summer Storm from The Rushmore Rollerz also made the long journey to roll with us from western South Dakota. No Coast Derby Girls graced the Smackdown with amazing derby action from DropKick Muffy and Brooke N Hearts. Some of Norfolk Bruzin Betties (Miss Ruthless, Kimakazee, Cream ur’ Soda and Erin Go Brawlin) showed up and proved they know a thing or two about derby. Miss .Roboflow from The Rocky Mountain Roller Girls was in attendance at the event in her old stomping ground and also received MVP. The Oskaloosa Mayhem Girls: BAMF, Spankins, and BAB came with their game faces and played one heck of a bout! And last but not least Titsie Pop came down to play and had a last minute co-pilot RidaCruel (who also received MVP) joined the crew and represented Naughty Pines Derby Dames. The game was full of showcasing what derby is all about and these ladies did exactly that. With hits, whips, strategy, and teamwork they pulled together to put on one heck of a show! It’s reported the teams “tied” which sits well with everyone because it wasn’t about the victory that night, it was about coming together and showing a town that had no idea what roller derby was about just how it’s done! The Veterans Moving Wall was the bout beneficiary and their organization received over $2,100 from the event.

Another mark on the derby map was completed that night because The Triple Threat Derby Girls are happy to say that Kearney and the surrounding areas now have a team to call their own: The Tri City Rolling Thunder Derby Girls. Mission Complete! Thanks again to all those who helped make this dream a reality, we couldn’t of done it without YOU! Roller Derby will be a worldwide legitimately recognized sport and we will stop at nothing to make that happen.

May Day in Hell!

In the true theme of “We’re on a Mission” Sum Mo Payne, down a couple ribs, and Danger Girl, delayed in Chicago, had a rough start to this adventure of a lifetime but would not stop be stopped… HELSINKI OR BUST! With 8 months of preparation under their belts and worldwide roller derby love on the brain, these warriors were making this a reality and an epic tale to be told.

Foreign air and travel proved enlightening on many aspects such as plane terminal naps between more than enough different boarding passes, gawking at camel shrines, sitting next to adolescents whom do not believe body odor is foul and a diet of tomato/cheese pizza. Reality showed its face when the duo finally was united over the pond under Tuppu’s gun receiving ink right of the bat to set the tone of EPICNESS that was to be held in this groundbreaking historical journey.

The next afternoon, The Triple Threat Ambassadors boarded a train with a destination for their first official derby check point: Lahti! Hosted by the Bay City Rollers, in attendance along with the Tampere Rollin’ Ho’s and Helsinki Roller Derby represented at the first overseas Bootcamp of the week and was the perfect way to start of the spreading of derby love & knowledge. Setting aside the language and cultural differences, roller derby knows no boundaries and was proven as a universal common bond.

After tea and t-shirts, the crew soaked in the surroundings. Finnish punk metal, candy covered salt and a wavy nap on a restaurant boat topped off the full day. The crew attempted to sleep in the land of minimal darkness to be awoken by porridge, eggs, & rye crackers with butter and cheese. Ready for round 2 and one step closer to May Day in Hell, some sightseeing of the Olympic Ski Jump. A train ride back to HEL proved to show the employees don’t take lightly to non-paying passengers on their lovely commutes. Landing Thursday at Tigre Forces’ house for a minute, the ladies finally got some much needed down time. That evening, minds were blown at the once in a lifetime sensory overload also known as Roger Waters “The Wall.”

On Friday evening, the crew was suffering from serious sleep deprivation but managed to throw off a full proactive 2 hr Bootcamp for HRD. It was awesome to watch the skill the that Helsinki Roller Derby girls had, the ladies laced up quietly and were ready for all that we had to offer. Afterwards, Danger & Mo retired early to sleep in the wonderful apartment courtesy of the coolest derby widow/new ref, Jori Hamalainen, knowing that the A.M. was bringing epicness around every corner!

The May Day in Hell experience was kicked off by an early riser Bootcamp taught by Estrogeena Davis (Team Finland Coach) and Swede Hurt (Team Sweden Coach). Fun was had and much was learned! The teams worked separately to practice for the big game that was about to be broadcasted on DNN that night. It was a good bout showing skill from all over the

WORLD! Afterwards, the T3 crew took the bus home and attempted to get some shuteye while all jacked up on jetlag & derby love. Highlight reels fell on the ladies’ brains before finally shutting off for the day. “I was shouting for you, you are a jammer killer” and “sorry I pulled on your trousers” were just a few of the memorable off track yelling favorites of the hours of derby awesomeness prior. But the best part of the whole day was realizing that after hearing the montage of roller derby vocabulary the actual word “roller derby” is “roller derby” no matter what the language. Words can’t express how valuable that word is because it’s just “roller derby” and no other word can even compare!

Before the birds were even awake, Genna & TestosteRon Jeremy were outside the crew’s window and ready to head to the next bootcamp.  They taught 2 on skates classes in the A.M., had a little lunch, and 2 more classes in the afternoon. 2 scrimmages were held that day with one of them being an all out scrimmage of refs and the whole nine yards! FUN TIMES! Afterwards, the ladies hoped on a derby/may day bus that the smell of derby love was intoxicating! Swede & Mo sat in the back soaking it all in. They talked about how great the weekend had been, how this is will need to be done again soon and how they should make plans to play together soon.

The after party was the perfect icing on the cake, filled with great food, drinks, deserts and people! Lots of picture taking, chatting, exchanging of information and of course the shenanigans of derby after parties took place. The neighbors to the restaurant were nice enough to offer to call the cops for those involved! Guess derby folks are loud… hmmm weird who knew?!

With tearful eyes, leaving the after party and not saying goodbye (goodbye is forever) to all the kick ass individuals involved with such an amazing experience was really rough. They have all been missed greatly since Mo & Dangers departure. The T3 ladies hopped on a train and went to the bus station with hopes of making it to their apartment, however after losing focus during a blabbering session, their stop was missed. They attempted to ask the driver (in English) if they should get off at the next stop and walk or if the bus would come back around. He did not respond and since they were in such a deep conversation from the day’s activities they just rode the bus until they landed at the last stop in the middle of NOW WHERE! The driver turned off the lights and even though they didn’t want to, they got off the bus. With arms & hand full of gear, merchandise and personal belongings the ladies waited for an opportunity to come along.

Since cell phones that cross the pond seem to not work, they were SOL. Danger had 3 hours to catch her plane and was trying to find the silver lining (with the help of some Finnish cocktails) while Mo got our her glue and reframed from complete breakdown on the situation…AND after at least a couple mile walk, an ANGEL aka a large German woman came flying down the abandoned road in her taxi! Danger flagged her down… Thank you derby gods, best 45 euro car ride EVER!

Mo was picked up in a cab later that morning aka 7am and taken to the airport where she ran into Twisted T and Hyper who showed derby love by helping check her in. Broken ribs and 2 minutes of sleep were not allowing her brain to work AT ALL! After dozing off on the floor in front of the boarding counter, she was awoken by her name over the intercom and packed into the bus of individuals not fond of her “Americanisms”.  After almost being kept in Canada, being asked about her belongings (plants? Food? Smokes?), not being giving a stamp in Toronto, she was off to Chicago and then at last home to her derby family.

This trip will not soon be forgotten, the people these two met will forever impact their lives. With plans of more bootcamps across the pond, skating the country of Holland and the new derby family members they could not have asked for more.
